A Newberry man is facing charges of assault on police and multiple drug offenses following a Safety Checkpoint in Clinton this weekend. 30-year-old Jason Leon Herbert Sr. of 211 Green Acres Lane, Newberry is charged with Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Distribute, with Possession of Crack Cocaine with Intent to Distribute and with Resisting Arrest by Assault on Police Officers. Officers from Clinton Public Safety and Presbyterian College Campus Police were on South Broad at Woodrow Street early Sunday morning and at 1:40 am Officer Stephen Lawton reportedly observed a white pickup approaching the safety checkpoint. He reported observing the smell of burned marijuana and investigated. A passenger was reportedly acting suspiciously. The driver allowed the vehicle to be searched and no contraband was located, but investigation allegedly located two clear plastic baggies which were determined to contain powder cocaine in one and crack cocaine in the other, along with a baggie containing marijuana and a roach. In warrants, Public Safety Officer Lawton states that Jason Leon Herbert Sr. resisted arrest during which two police officers were wounded. He allegedly head butted a Public Safety officer causing a ‘busted’ lip and caused a minor laceration to the left arm of a PC officer during the arrest on South Harper at Woodrow. Warrants state that Herbert was in possession of one gram of a white powdery substance that field tested positive as cocaine and also of one gram of crack cocaine Sunday Oct 12 on South Broad at Woodrow. Herbert was also issued a ticket charging him with Simple Possession of Marijuana 1:42 am Sunday at the Traffic Safety Checkpoint. During arraignment yesterday bonds were set totaling $60,652. Jason Leon Herbert Sr. remained in the Johnson Detention Facility this morning.
