Laurens City Police were dispatched to East Farley at 9:26 yesterday morning on an assault in progress report. A woman had called to say she and her husband were watching a man on top of a female hitting her. On arrival at the scene Sgt. Shane Martin reportedly observed a man and woman standing in the road. They both told him nothing was going on. He noted the woman had dirt on her pants and shirt consistent with being on the ground. A scratch was observed on the man’s head and nose. He was placed into investigative detention. Officers determined the two were not being honest in saying nothing was going on. The witnesses were contacted and gave a statement of the man having been on top of the woman “beating her in the face.” The male suspect reportedly said he was trying to go home and she didn’t want him to, was following him and fell. Officers arrested 41-year-old Mitchell Patrick Westfield of 100-B Dial Street, Laurens and he was issued a ticket charging him with Criminal Domestic Violence at 10:14 on East Farley. Mitchell Patrick Westfield was being held in the Johnson Detention Center pending a bond hearing.
