Sheriff’s Major Joe Tyson, Administrator of the Johnson Detention Center, updated Laurens County Council this week on the jail’s recent certification, complying with the “Prison Rape Elimination Act.” The certification indicates the professional ability to stay updated with the most effective standards in correction facilities across the country. An audit of the county’s detention center’s ability to prevent prison rape was conducted in April. Major Tyson told council that the facility is now the third in South Carolina to receive this certification. He also said the detention center has reduced its disciplinary problems by 70%.
