National business leaders are concerned about the need for more people trained in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for new jobs being created. This area of expertise is referred to as “STEM.” An expected 1.2 million jobs may go lacking a qualified person to fill them in the next several years, according to information presented to the District 55 School Board Monday night. Noting that Laurens High School has a STEM program designed to prepare students for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math jobs of the future, E B Morse Elementary Principal Dr. Ameca Thomas informed the trustees that E B Morse is now one of the 1st schools in the state to have a STEM program operating at the elementary level. She and STEM teacher Charlsie Downs reviewed the program for the school board. Initial implementation occurred this school year, while full implementation of the program will take place in the next school year. Dr. Ameca Thomas also expressed a goal of addressing the deficiency of women and minorities qualified for STEM opportunities.
