Receiving Stolen Goods or Services

The Sheriff’s Office yesterday arrested 21-year-old Bryson Avery Smith of 45 Montague Drive, Fountain Inn and charged him with Criminally Receiving Goods or Services. Lt. McIntosh states that on October 26, 2016 Smith obtained money or goods which he appropriated for personal use. Bryson Avery Smith was released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond.

Vandalism to Clinton Residence

A report of vandalism to a home dispatched Clinton Public Safety Officer Ryan Mercer to a residence southwest of the Downtown area yesterday afternoon. He arrived on scene and made contact with the complainant, who showed the damages done to his home. Bricks had reportedly been thrown through a window, the front door had been kicked open from the inside and the door frame was pushed outward. A screen covering the broken window had been torn open so that a person could fit through it. Two bricks lay in the hallway in front of the rear door, and broken glass was observed both inside and outside the home. Even with all the damage, there did not appear to be anything stolen. Officer Mercer told the victim that he would be asking for extra patrol of the area. The damages were estimated at $300.

Damage to Laurens Home under Construction

Laurens Police responded Wednesday morning to report of a break-in at an unoccupied home under construction in the Milliken Pond area, east of Downtown. Officer Gallo spoke with a contractor who came to do door framing and said it appeared someone had been inside. The officer noted it seemed that someone had been in the attic. A check revealed numerous holes in the attic drywall. Additional inspection found broken windows in the house. Damage was estimated at $1,200. The matter is under investigation.

Awards for Two Who Train Others for Work

Two members of Piedmont Technical College’s Economic Development and Continuing Education division have been recognized for their outstanding work by the South Carolina Association for Higher Continuing Education. Instructor Dave Wittig was named Outstanding Continuing Education Instructor. He said “It’s nice to be recognized for all the hard work and wanting to do a good job.”

Wittig spent four years in the United States Air Force and six years in the Air Force Reserves, working on instrument panels in C-130 airplanes. This detail-oriented work helps him teach statistical process control in training new employees for the massive ZF Transmissions plant here I Laurens County. When he began teaching the class, there were no detailed training manuals. Wittig worked with other trainers to develop materials that taught not only the book knowledge, but incorporated hands-on training and real world examples.

Also receiving the Continuing Education skills was Lisa Bartanus, a corporate training director at Piedmont Tech. She received the John J. Duffy Scholarship Award.

Assault the Day after Christmas

Laurens City Police yesterday arrested a man wanted by Clinton Public Safety for an alleged domestic assault the day after last Christmas. 19-year-old Shykeem Rashon Cook of 150 First Street, Laurens is charaged with Domestic Violence 3rd Degree. In a warrant, Cook is accused of assaulting the victim on December 26, 2016 at 590 Phillips Street by striking her in the face and by pulling her hair, resulting in apparent minor injury. He and the victim reportedly have a child in common.

Skykeem Cook was being held overnight, pending a bond hearing.

Three Domestic Assaults charges for Man, Woman

A Laurens area man and woman were both charged yesterday with Domestic Violence for alleged assaults on each other. Sheriff’s Deputy Adam Galloway arrested the two Wednesday. In a warrant served yesterday, 27-year-old Aynesha Seirra Craig of 106 Aquilla Road, Laurens is accused of actions that were likely to result in minor bodily injury by striking and scratching the victim in the presence of their two minor children. Ms. Aynesha Craig was released yesterday on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond for her Domestic Violence charge.

28-year-old Demarcus Darrell Crooks, also of 106 Aquilla Road, Laurens, was charged with Domestic Violence of a High and Aggravated Nature and with Domestic Violence 2nd Degree, both on Wednesday. The High and Aggravated Nature warrant states that he pointed a loaded handgun at the victim, saying he would kill her. The 2nd Degree Domestic Assault warrant stated he struck, scratched and bit the victim Wednesday in the presence of their two minor children. With cash or surety bonds set yesterday totaling $35,000, Demarcus Darrell Crooks remained in the Laurens County Detention Center this morning.

Marijuana Distribution Charged

A Mountville man was charged with Marijuana Distribution yesterday, following his arrest the previous night.  Clinton Public Safety Officer Derric Gandee pulled a vehicle over Wednesday night after allegedly observing it doing 45 in a 25-mile-per-hour zone Downtown. The officer reported that on approaching the car he noticed the scent of marijuana from the vehicle.  Discussion with the driver about that reportedly led to his indicating he had five or six grams of marijuana under the front seat. Officers searched and reported locating some 12 grams of marijuana. He reportedly indicated to officers that, without a job, he sold marijuana to make money.

21-year-old Rumike Genero Dendy Jr. of 69 JW Drive, Mountville was served yesterday with warrants charging him with Distribution of Marijuana and with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The warrants state that Mr. Dendy possessed a quantity of marijuana Wednesday night that was individually packaged in three bags, alongside an electronic scale. The second warrant states that the scales had marijuana residue on it. Rumike Genero Dendy Jr. was released yesterday on personal recognizance bonds totaling $3,000.

Attempted Murder for Sunday Shooting

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office made an arrest yesterday in connection with a shooting that happened last Sunday. 19-year-old Billy DeShawn “B.J.” Watson Jr. of 1522 Parkway, Apt. G-7, Greenwood is charged with Attempted Murder and Possession of a Weapon during a Violent Crime.

Deputy Hunnicutt states that on January 15th Billy Watson Jr. attempted to commit murder by causing great bodily injury to the victim. He allegedly shot him in the stomach, requiring medical treatment. Watson is further accused of possessing and displaying what appeared to be a handgun during the commission of a violent crime.

Billy DeShawn “B.J.” Watson Jr. was being held overnight in the Laurens County Detention Center, pending a bond hearing today.

Obtaining Funds under False Pretense

Laurens City Police Saturday arrested 38-year-old Joseph Lowell Thompson of 1229 Casey Road, Woodruff on a charge of Obtaining Goods under False Pretenses . Detective Kanipe states that between October 31st and November 9th, 2016 Thompson did obtain, possess and fill out personal banking checks that belonged to the victim without legal right to do so. Joseph Thompson is accused of using deception to obtain money from stolen checks by misleading the victim into believing the checks were legitimate. The victim was asked by Thompson to cash the checks and turn the money over to him.

Joseph Lowell Thompson was released on a $2,000 personal recognizance bond.

Arrest Alleges 2nd Domestic Assault

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Saturday following an alleged assault on his wife. 52-year-old Charles Delbert Heilman of 249 Cook Street, Gray Court was charged with Domestic Violence 2nd Degree. A warrant citing the investigation of Corporal Brent Rushing stated that on January 21st Charles Heilman committed 2nd Degree Domestic Violence by hitting his wife three times, causing a bloody nose. The warrant states that the defendant has a prior conviction for Domestic Violence. With a cash or surety bond set at $50,000, Charles Delbert Heilman remained in the Laurens County Detention Center this morning.

Meth Possession with Intent

Meth Possession with Intent to Distribute was charged on a Mountville woman Friday. The Sheriff’s Office had arrested 23-year-old Maisie Michelle Stansberry of 108 Shortleaf Drive, Mountville on Thursday, also charging her with Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Deputy Andrew Hall states that on January 19th Ms. Stansberry possessed Methamphetamine, a schedule II controlled substance with intent to distribute. She was also accused of knowingly and intentionally possessing Clonazepam, a schedule IV controlled substance, without authority.

Cash or surety bonds were set totaling $25,000. Maisie Michelle Stansberry remained in the Laurens County Detention Center this morning.

PWID Marijuana

The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office Friday served a Marijuana Distribution charge on a Greenville man who was arrested Thursday.

19-year-old Aaron Tyler Simmons of 410 Earl Drive, Greenville was charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute. A warrant states that on January 19th Simmons was in possession of more than 28 grams of marijuana, which was packaged separately, and that he also had a digital scale. With a $15,000 cash or surety bond, Aaron Tyler Simmons remained in the Laurens County Detention Center this morning.

Meth Distribution

The Sheriff’s Office served a Distribution of Methamphetamine charge Friday on 42-year-old Michael Jerome Davis of 12,409 Highway 72 West, Cross Hill. Deputy Andrew Hall states that on Thursday, January 19th Mr. Davis possessed methamphetamine with intent to distribute, dispense of deliver. Michael Jerome Davis was later released on a $20,000 cash or surety bond.

$50,000 bond on Probation Violation

The State Department of Pardon, Probation and Parole arrested 24-year-old Tyquis Syjuan Jenkins of 507 Elm Street, Laurens Friday for a Violation of Probation charge.

Jenkins is accused of changing his residence without consent of his agent, of failing to maintain lawful employment, or to provide proof thereof. He is also accused of failing to pay supervision fees and being behind in other required fees. Jenkins is also accused of leaving the state of South Carolina without  consent of his agent, with failing to maintain compliance with his travel permit issued last September 30th and of failing to follow advice and consent of his agent.

A $50,000 cash or surety bond was set during arraignment this weekend. Tyquis Syjuan Jenkins remained in the Laurens County Detention Center this morning.

Meth Distribution & Other Charges

Meth Distribution and other charges were served Friday on a man arrested by the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office last Thursday. 44-year-old Keith Wayne Pope of 110 Shurlington Lane, Hodges is charged with Distribution of Methamphetamine and with two counts, Possession of a Controlled Substance.

Deputy Andrew Hall states that on January 19th Keith Wayne Pope possessed methamphetamine with intent to distribute, dispense or deliver.

Pope also was allegedly in possession of Clonazepam, a  schedule IV controlled substance along with Acetaminopohen and Hydrocodone, a schedule II controlled substance.

In a 5th charge served on Keith Wayne Pope, a Laurens County warrant issued in December, 2004 that charges him with a Fraudulent Check violation. That warrant states that in June of that year Mr. Pope issued a $20 check that had insufficient funds to cover it.

Cash or surety bonds were set totaling $30,150 on all five charges. Keith Wayne Pope remained in the Laurens County Detention Center this morning.

Meth Labs Found in Garbage Cart Friday

Laurens City Police arrested a woman after allegedly finding meth labs in her household garbage Thursday. 34-year-old Melissa Posey OShields of 106 Watts Street, Laurens was served warrants Friday charging her with

Manufacturing Methamphetamine and with Unlawful Disposal of Meth Waste. Warrants citing the investigation of Officer Benjamin Gallo state that on January 19th Ms. Oshields manufactured methamphetamine. Officers allegedly located multiple one-pot meth labs, along with liquid fire, drain cleaner, cold packs, salt, lithium batteries, camp fuel and empty pseudophedrine packaging at her residence in Laurens. Officers state they located multiple one-pot meth labs inside the curbside trash can that had been placed for pickup at 106 Watts Street. Cash or surety bonds were set on the two charges totaling $30,000. Melissa Posey O’Shields remained in the Laurens County Detention Center this morning.

Computer Theft of over $30,000 from a Clinton Business

Clinton Public Safety charged a North Georgia man Friday in connection with the computerized theft of over $30,000 from a Clinton business last September. 28-year-old Michael Anthony Downer of 102 Club View Court, Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia was charged with Obtaining Property under False Tokens/Letters and with Computer Crime of over $10,000.

Sgt. Mercer states that between September 27th and 28th 2016 Mr. Downer received $32,831.11 under false pretense. These funds were allegedly obtained through fraudulent emails to Cooper Motor Company of Clinton. The Computer Crime charge states that Downer accessed ATM computer equipment to obtain $5,500 from the same victim, and that this offense originated from a wire transfer from Clinton.

Michael Anthony Downer of the Chattanooga area was released on cash or surety bonds totaling $50,000.

Two Arrests after Search Warrant at a Laurens Motel

Laurens City Police served multiple drug charges Friday on two men arrested early that day following execution of a search warrant at a motel in town.

26-year-old Aaron Devain Brown of 118 Chosen Drive, Fountain Inn and 26-year-old James Tyler Harris of 605 Church Street, Laurens were charged with Trafficking in Meth or Cocaine Base, Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute and Possession of another Controlled Substance. Two additional warrants charged Brown and Harris with Possession with Intent to Distribute both Methamphetamine and Marijuana within Proximity of a Park.

Warrants citing an investigation of Detective Kanipe indicate that the lawful execution of a search warrant at 102 Bolt Drive January 20th found that Aaron Brown and James Harris had approximately 17.9 grams of methamphetamine in their possession and that each was also in possession of 73.6 grams of marijuana. Two additional warrants for each man state that he was in possession of the Meth and Marijuana within a half mile of the Little River Park.

Both were also accused of having Schedule IV controlled substances in possession without authority. Aaron Brown allegedly had eight pills, while James Harris reportedly had six pills without a prescription.

Cash or Surety bonds on the five charges were set totaling $140,000 for each.  Aaron Devain Brown and James Tyler Harris remained in the Laurens County Detention Center this morning.

Local Notes:

CHS: last Friday the Clinton Red Devils hosted the Woodruff Wolverines in varsity basketball action.

  • Girls: Woodruff 32 – Clinton 27… The girls’ game saw the Red Devils come out cold and only score 3 points in the first half to Woodruff’s 15… The Red Devils then came back in the second half and outscored the Wolverines 24-17 with 15 of their second half points in the fourth period only to come up on the short end of a 32-27 loss to the Wolverines… Savannah Campbell led the charge in the fourth period with 3-three-point goals… MK Kelly led all scorers with 14 points and was the only Red Devil in double digits… Campbell finished the game with 9 points, and both Kalen Richardson and Alyssa Abercrombie had 2 points each.
  • Boys: Clinton 51 – Woodruff 27… Now better news for Red Devil fans where the boys are concerned as Clinton rolled to a 51-27 win over Woodruff… The Red Devils built a 27-8 lead at the half and continued to pull away in the second half and were never really threatened… Coach Eddie Romines said the team played great defense but did not shoot the ball very well… He also commented he was glad everyone got to play in the win…Jalen Carter led all scorers with 15 points and was the only Red Devil in double-digits… Others scoring for Clinton were Zay Hurley with 8 points while both Josh Williams and Tymori Tribble had 6 points each… RJ Suber & Kiah Young had 4 points each, Jahleed Cook & Vilo Boys each had 3 while Keith Neal rounded out the scoring with 2 points… The Red Devils are now 12-3 overall and 4-0 in region play…. The Red Devils host Chapman tomorrow.

LDHS:

Basketball: The Laurens Raiders traveled to Greenwood last Friday night to take on the Eagles in region play.

  • Girls: Greenwood 72 – Laurens 53… The Lady Raiders got off to a slow start as the Eagles jumped on top 22-10 at the end of the first quarter and the Raiders never were able to dig themselves out of the hole as Greenwood took a 72-53 win… They did outscore the Eagles 20-18 in the third quarter but never managed to get closer than 11 points in that period… Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon was the only Raider in double digits with 14 points… Others putting points on the board for the Raiders were Qua Fortson and Malaysia Todd with 9 points each, Alexus Espinosa 8, Tieisha Jones 5, MK Moore 4, Ashunti Smith 4, and Portland Wallace 2… The team is now 7-10 overall and 1-3 in region play.
  • Boys: Greenwood 64 – Laurens 56… Unfortunately for Raider fans the news is no better in the boys’ game as the Raiders fell 64-56… The Raiders trailed by 6 at the end of the first quarter but cut the deficit to 1 and trailed 28-27 at the half… The Raiders carried a 45-44 win going into the final 8 minutes of play but Greenwood outscored the Raiders 20-11 during that time to take the win… Greenwood led by 5 with about 1:30 left on the clock when things really went south or the Raiders as an intentional foul called on them plus Coach Sinclair picking up his second technical foul gave the Eagles free throws and possession to put them further ahead and continued to hit free throws down the stretch to take the win… The Raiders were led by Josh Greene with 14 points while Ryan Dacre had 10… Others scoring were Ty Foster with 9. Dontae Shumpert & Justin Anderson 8 each, Keenan Dickey with 4, Carson Todd 2 and Rakeem Franklin 1 … The Raiders fall to 4-13 aamd 1-3 in region play… The Raiders host the Hillcrest Rams tomorrow night

 

Laurens Academy: Last Friday the LA Crusaders traveled down to Winnsboro to take on the Richard Winn Eagles

  • Girls: LA 42 – RW 32… In girls action the Lady Crusaders ran their season record to 16-2 and region record to 4-0 as they took a 42-32 win over the lady Eagles… The game was tried 9-9 at the end of the first quarter but the Crusaders outscored the Eagles 11-6 in the second quarter and then continued to outscore the Eagles in last 2 quarters to take the win… The Crusaders had two players in double-digits with Taylor Campbell having a game-high 18 points and Ruthie Moore with 11… Others scoring for the Crusaders were Florence Mitchell & Morgan Marlett with 4 each, Regan Williamson 3 and Blair Quarles 2.
  • Boys: RW 46 – LA 41… In the final game of the evening, the Crusaders fell to the Eagles 46-41 as they ran out of time in their comeback attempt.. The Crusaders only scored 2 points in the first quarter and trailed 25-12 at the half… The Crusaders outscored the Eagles in the third and fourth quarter but the comeback fell a little short…. Jonathan Burns led the Crusaders with 13 points and Joshua Moore was also in double-digits with 12… Rounding out the scoring for the Crusaders you have Noah Moore 6 points while both Will Price and Dawson Foster chipped in 5 each.
