Severe thunderstorm warnings were out for Laurens and some surrounding counties yesterday afternoon. We had reports of hail and high winds. The north side of Clinton had a lot of trees down and power outages. As of 5:38 yesterday afternoon trees were down on North Broad Street, Sloan, North Holland, Simmons Drive and Caldwell Street. Other trees noted down near Interstate 26 in Clinton. Clinton utilities responded to power outages on Willard Road, Westchase Apartments, North Holland and Florida Streets. Broad Street was closed for a few hours at the Clinton Public Safety Offices. Other streets closed from the storm were Florida and Shands Streets, and Oakland Street between North Broad and Florida. The storms did bring out the best in some people. Public Safety Officers were especially appreciative of one little girl who saw them out directing traffic at the closure of North Broad Street yesterday afternoon. She coaxed her parents into taking her around so that she could hand out bottles of water to the officers who were out in the street working traffic following the storm. Officers we spoke with didn’t know the little girl’s name but they were very thankful for her actions.
