The cold, icy weather of a few weeks ago is giving way to warmer temperatures in our area. The Laurens Commission of Public Works this week received updates on how the utility system handled the wind and cold.
CPW management reported some trees fell on Meadow Road and on Jones and Sullivan’s Streets, and there were about 15 customers without power as a result of the ice. Power was safely reconnected within a few hours.
The CPW sent a line truck and crew to Abbeville and a service bucket and crew to Greenwood on the 18th and 19th of February to help those cities with their restoration of power following damage from the ice. Authorities in Greenwood and Abbeville sent ‘thank you’ messages following the repairs.
Vehicles also cause problems for utility systems. In Laurens during February three power poles were hit. These were on Highway 221 on Feb 13th, on Gordon St on or about Feb 17th and on Hillcrest near Whitefords on Feb 26th. Commissioners advised that none of these resulted in power outages. Meanwhile, insurance data was being collected for the CPW to be reimbursed for the damages caused by the poles being struck.
