Laurens County Council this week approved a $100 net Christmas bonus for county employees, but not without opposition. Councilman Stewart Jones took issue with this and was the only “no” vote Tuesday evening, citing the county’s current budget situation. Council members Anderson and McDaniel expressed mixed emotions on the matter, noting that some employees had been granted raises in July while others had not. Diane Anderson presented an amendment to the bonus proposal which would designate the funds to come from the contingency fund. Garrett McDaniel said he felt that the amount was excessive, also pointing to the budget situation of the county, but he and Anderson both voted yes. Chairman Joe Wood said “Our employees are our most important asset, they we willing to try to save money in cutting our budget, and they deserve this.”
