The fatal wreck on Interstate 26 near Joanna last week raised Laurens County’s fatality count for the year to 21. That contrasts with 10 at this time last year. Yesterday’s weekly update from South Carolina Public Safety indicates that statewide, highway fatalities remain below last year. As of midnight Sunday, we had 598 highway deaths for 2017, as opposed to 616 this time last year. Of this year’s 598 deaths, 420 were motor vehicle occupants, 80 were pedestrians, 69 were on motorcycles and 12 were on bicycle. Laurens & Aiken counties are tied for 8th highest highway deaths, each with 21. Charleston & Horry are tied for 1st place with 40 deaths each.
