The giant South Carolina Utility, Santee Cooper, has been in the news a lot lately, following its decision to stop construction of additional nuclear reactors. The multi-billion dollar project was to add reactors at the V.C. Sumner Nuclear Plant on the Broad River, north of Columbia in Fairfield County.

At the Laurens Commission of Public Work August meeting last evening,  the C.P.W. General Manger addressed the local utility’s relationship with Santee Cooper.  John Young said “In light of recent events in the media, I would like to explain PMPA, and the CPW’s relationship with Santee Cooper. You may remember the CPW is a member of PMPA which owns 25% of the Catawba nuclear plant located on Lake Wylie near Charlotte, from which we receive most of our electricity. In 2014, PMPA signed a supplemental power agreement with Santee Cooper to provide ‘peaking power’ on those days when we exceed our available capacity of Catawba. This agreement is specifically for power produced at Santee’s Rainey Plant, which is a 500-Megawatt combined-cycle natural gas turbine plant located in Iva, SC.” Young noted that the C.P.W. does not buy electricity from Santee Cooper’s nuclear plant.

Young went on to say that the C.P.W. has a very strong and positive relationship with Santee Cooper. He noted that Santee Cooper has provided several grants to assist with economic development projects here. Young also noted that the C.P.W. is now working with Santee Cooper, receiving assistance from them in replacing the sign at the Hunter Industrial Park.
