Clinton Public Safety Officer Stephen Lawton was performing routine patrol on North Broad at 23 minutes after midnight this morning when he stopped behind a yellow Mustang for a red light at the intersection with US 76. He reportedly observed one front seat passenger and a rear seat passenger didn’t have their seat belts on. As the traffic light turned green he followed as the car turned left into McDonalds, reportedly only signaling the turn when starting the turn. Officer Lawton then made a traffic stop in the restaurant parking lot. He issued citations for the failure to properly signal and for seat belt violation. During the investigation he questioned why the occupants were moving around so much after the stop. An investigation turned up a container with pills on the front seat passenger. These were found to not be controlled substances and this passenger was delivered to the Pilot on I-26 where his truck rig was parked. Small amounts of meth were reportedly found on the driver and rear seat passenger. The driver, a 52-year-old Clinton woman, was booked at City Jail this morning on charges of Possession of Less than a Gram of Meth and for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The rear seat passenger, a 61-year-old Clinton man, was booked on a Possession of Paraphernalia charge.
